On St. Valentine’s Day, minds and hearts will turn toward loved ones. All that love also creates data and e-commerce and retail store revenue. In the UK, Finder.com reports that £1.37 billion was spent on Valentine’s Day in 2022. Author Reemul Balla reckoned that 76 percent of Brits (40 million) celebrated the occasion. Regulatory Standards Hold Key to CAV Development

Quite often and in many industries, such as financial services, there is call for the reduction of regulation and the liberalization of market.

In the case of connected and autonomous vehicles the opposite is true, and it has to be so. The key issue is the lack of regulatory harmonization across borders, making the development of what Magnus Gunnarsson, head of connected vehicle at Ericsson, calls ‘global cars’ much trickier to achieve.

He points out that the automotive industry is global. Vehicles may be engineered in one country and then manufactured in another part of the world before being shipped and sold in a third nation. “With the increase of local data protection regulations, the environment is getting somewhat more complicated and we are, therefore, designing our technology in a way that can combine the automaker’s need for global service roll-outs with the regulatory needs for local data management,” he says.

Diffusing the Connected Car’s Ticking Data Privacy Timebomb

Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) collate a significant amount of data to ensure vehicle safety, requiring an always-on internet connection and hundreds of sensors.

An entire industry has been developed around monitoring, logging, analyzing and monetizing it. Yet, the danger is, particularly with increasing cyber-attacks, that this data could end up being leaked and stolen.

With safety being paramount, and with the threat that hackers could take over a connected and autonomous vehicle, there is increasingly a need to ensure that smart car data leakages. Cassandra Moons, data protection officer at TomTom explains why CAVs are a ticking data privacy timebomb by first of all suggesting that connectivity in cars has evolved in ways that reflect how people live their lives today. So, not long ago the idea of always being connected was just a prediction of the future but nowadays being “always-on” is an increasing reality for many people. It’s becoming the norm.

Automating SD-WANs? Why you need WAN acceleration

When tech encourages more data, you have to increase your performance.

Software-defined WANs are a great technology and Robert Sturt, Managing Director of Netify, argues that they’re “the most fundamental change in networking since MPLS took over from frame relay and asynchronous transfer mode.” He believes SD-WANs are the beginning of the technology stack journey and their integration with artificial intelligence and automation represents the “next phase of capitalising on extensive insights and data already generated by SD-WAN systems." It was argued in 2017 by Index Engines that GDPR puts personal data back in the hands of citizens. This raises the question: “Does this still apply?”

No matter what has changed, one challenge will remain: organisations’ ability to find business and legal-critical information within their vast unstructured data stores. Then there are the decisions about when to delete and where to store it, when to modify and rectify it. This is a complex issue now involving multiple petabytes of data, and organisations have no real understanding of what their unstructured data contains. With this top of mind, there is arguably a need for Wide Area Network (WAN) acceleration to gain the ability to find and move data around at high speed by mitigating latency and packet loss. This works to provide quicker data access and retrieval.

What are the data protection challenges of managing compliance on private devices?

Post-Brexit, the Information Commissioner’s Office in the UK has decided to call the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations, ‘Frozen GDPR’. Raili Maripuu, CEO of regtech indoor positioning technology company Mobilewatch, says the key focus is to have clear guidelines and processes on the differences between dealing with cross-border data retention, transfer and storage in multi-site situations before and after 31 December 2020.

Here’s what the ICO has to say about it: “The term ‘Frozen GDPR’ is not an official title and it’s not used in the law itself. However, we think it’s a useful label to help you understand this part of the data protection regime. The ‘Frozen GDPR’ is the EU GDPR almost exactly as it existed on 31st December 2020. The only change is that Articles 60 to 76 of the EU GDPR (on co-operation and consistency) are deleted from the Frozen GDPR.”
